The Turtle is a tier 7 Ocean animal in Mope.io, and is equivalent to the Zebra, Donkey, Macaw, Muskox, and Warthog. It was released on November 28, 2016.
Technical
- Upgrades from the Jellyfish, Fox, Hedgehog, Peacock, Arctic Fox, or Fennec Fox at 12K XP.
- Upgrades to the Stingray, Cobra, Giraffe, Raven, Walrus, Snowy Owl, or Camel at 25K XP.
- Prey of the Turtle includes all animals from tier 6 to tier 2 (Jellyfish to Trout). It can eat all food except for conches, clams, coconuts, bananas, cacti, whole aloevera plants, and large meat.
- Predators of the Turtle include all animals tier 8 to tier 17 (Stingray to Black Dragon).
- The Turtle's special ability is "Hide in Shell", usable only on land. While
Wor right-click is held, the Turtle hides in its shell to reduce damage and XP loss by 70% at the cost of being slowed by 50%. If the Turtle enters water while the ability key is held down, it will immediately dive. - Its passive abilities are surviving on dry land (although moving 10% slower), and climbing on rocks and hills.
- The Turtle can hide in whirlpools and large hiding holes.
Appearance
The current default skin for the Turtle is the Season 1 skin. The Turtle is a green reptile with faded brown spots on its small rounded head, four flippers, and short thick tail. Its head has a beak, nostrils, and appropriately sized black eyes in slight sockets. The Turtle's carapace is rich brown, slightly ridged, with three hexagonal sets of scutes down its length. Some of its orange plastron is visible under the head and where its flippers meet with its body.
While on land, its flippers bend slightly outwards and it extends its head out more to reveal its long neck. When using its ability in most skins, the Turtle pulls its head, flippers, and tail closer into its body
When hiding in the shell, only small bits of the green can be seen in the shell.

Strategy
Using the Turtle
- The Turtle lacks any offensive ability and thus farming is often the quickest method to level up. Eat kelp, seaweed, and mushroom bushes to level up quickly.
- Being able to walk on land for long periods is a rare trait among Ocean animals, and can be exploited in a few ways.
- Possibly the most straightforward usage is to dodge Ocean predators by climbing a sandhill/rock, an island, or going on the beach. Few Ocean animals can climb sandhills/rocks, so if given the choice always go for that option. The player should avoid lingering on islands as safety as predators may beach themselves and still go after the player: use islands more like a shortcut than a barrier.
- Even then, because of the amount of food that spawns on islands, the player will have to push through conches and clams and may be bit in the process.
- Be cautious with trees on islands, as the gaps between them may not be large enough for the player to fit through. Verify that one can fit.
- Another use is to locate food, in particular the aforementioned mushroom bushes.
- Chasing after Land animals is not recommended as the Turtle will flag behind, and going away from water puts the player at risk of being attacked by a Land predator who will quickly kill the player. If hunting on Land, always stay near water for a quick getaway.
- Melons and Honey Bees are another option for food, but usually farming for a moment in the Ocean is a safer and quicker method.

- Because it has no offensive abilities, the Turtle tends to struggle to reign in prey.
- One technique that can help is to cut tight corners around terrain.
- In terms of prey, Jellyfish is an effective and easy one. They turn very slowly, struggle to fit between sandhills and islands, and have a short dive time. Try to keep them from entering regions with large amounts of food as it may be enough to upgrade them.
- The Turtle can also compete well with the Flamingo who can only flee when on hills.
- If running from a terrain-climbing predator, do not climb terrain as the Turtle moves slower over hills and rocks. The only exception is if the predator does not climb rocks, in which the player can climb a rock for temporary safety as long as they can fully fit at the center.
- Similarly, avoid using terrain to catch up to prey unless they are also slow climbers.
- Use the Turtle's special ability as an absolute last resort. The Turtle is versatile enough that it usually has an escape method.
- Opt to dive from danger rather than tuck in the shell if water is nearby.
- A very niche use is if the player knows there are larger predators nearby. Hiding in the shell may delay consumption enough for them to take notice and attack the player's predator.
- Using the Leather Back Turtle skin may confer a minuscule amount of protection as it superficially resembles the Ancient Tortoise, a Sea Monster skin.
- Conversely, do not confuse the Ancient Tortoise as a Turtle skin. The Ancient Tortoise is much larger, has an angry expression that no skins currently have, and has a red outline indicative of a predator. It also uses a unique diving asset while all Turtle skins use the default 4 diving dots.
Against the Turtle
The Ancient Tortoise is not a Turtle skin
- Turtles are of little threat on either dry land or Ocean and will likely ignore the player to farm.
- The one exception is if the player is a Jellyfish, of which they are the biggest threat because it can maneuver better than they can. Eat food quickly to upgrade so the player doesn't have to deal with them, and make use of diving if the Turtle gets close enough to bite.
- Should a Turtle be on dry land and the player is a land predator, pursue them away from water. They are slower than most prey, and even with their ability delaying death, will be eaten eventually once cornered.
- If the player can climb terrain quickly, use hills and/or rocks. Turtles are slower on terrain than on normal land.
- If playing as one of the rare Eagles or Argentavis, don't bother with trolling Turtles as they drain water only somewhat faster than normal land animals do.
- Verify that a Turtle is indeed a Turtle before attacking, and not an Ancient Tortoise-skinned Sea Monster. The Ancient Tortoise is much larger (typically), has a blue keeled shell with a teal body and bared eyes that no skins have, has a unique diving asset, and is very slow on land. If the player is tier 15 to tier 7, the Ancient Tortoise will have a red outline.
- Avoid using size as a measure as some Ancient Tortoises mini and become the size of a Turtle or smaller.

Trivia
- While the word "turtle" can refer to any reptile with a shell formed from their ribs (in the order Testudines), colloquially the word more often refers to the freshwater group rather than the saltwater sea turtles that the Turtle is visually based on.
- Multiple Turtle skins appear to be based on real species of sea turtle.
- The Season 1 and 2 skins are likely based on the green sea turtle.
- The Leather Back Turtle directly references its real life counterpart.
- The Trash Turtle resembles the Kemp's ridley sea turtle, the most endangered sea turtle. Many declines in sea turtles have been attributed to plastic pollution. The skin, being released as part of the 2025 summer skins, may also be a joke on the common nickname "plastic pollution" given to the game's summer items during summer updates, as they are numerous in the Ocean.
- The Turtle is the only animal to have a different appearance on different terrain without using abilities.
- The Turtle doesn't fully retract into its shell in any skin. This is accurate, as real sea turtles are incapable of fully hiding in their shells.
