The Phoenix is a tier 15 Volcano animal, and equivalent to the Dragon, T-Rex, Bigfoot, Kraken, King Crab, Yeti, Snowman, Snowgirl, and Pterodactyl. It was introduced on June 6, 2018.
Technical
- The Phoenix upgrades from the Elephant, Giant Spider, Cassowary, Blue Whale, Mammoth, or Blackwidow Spider at 1M XP.
- Upon reaching 5M XP, it evolves into the Land Monster, Dino Monster, Ice Monster, Sea Monster, or Giant Scorpion.
- Lava is the Phoenix's main source of sustenance, rather than water. It has a lava bar rather than a water bar, which can be replenished by staying in the vicinity of lava (Volcano and Desert), or by using a healing stone.
- The Phoenix will not lose lava if it is in the Volcano biome, but loses lava fast outside of the Volcano. In the Desert, the Phoenix's lava loss is notably slower than in Land, Ocean, and Arctic.
- By pressing
S, the Phoenix can shoot fire, in the same way that animals with water as sustenance can shoot water pods. However, this takes up a lot of lava, and at full lava bar, the Phoenix can only do three shots at most. The fire hurts on contact and will set Animals on fire if it lands on them, similarly to the Dragon's fire.
- The Phoenix eat all types of food except for dates, cactus pears, and berries.
- Prey of the Phoenix includes all animals below it from tier 14 to tier 6 (Elephant to Fox).
- Predators of the Phoenix includes all animals above it form tier 16 to tier 17 (Land Monster to Black Dragon).
- The Phoenix's special ability is "Fire Tornado": by holding
W, a target will appear, and releasingWwill forcefully spawn a fire tornado (at the cost of some lava). If the target was on an animal, it will attack that animal. Tornadoes periodically spit out fireballs which sets other animals (including other Phoenixes) on fire. The size of the tornado is generally small, but scales with the Phoenix's size. Fire tornadoes can't be fired if low on lava.- While holding
Wthe Phoenix is unable to enter hiding holes and will automatically move forwards towards the target at a constant speed. If the Phoenix takes damage or is stunned, the ability will be canceled. - The target stays on the animal with their username noted but will stop moving if that animal dies.
- The tornadoes have health bars. Once health is lost, it cannot be regained. Health is lost gradually when the tornado is in water or instantly on contact with water drops. The tornado loses health naturally over time in increments, regardless of water, and will eventually despawn.
- If the player is too far from their fire tornado, it will slowly come back to them and stay near them until its health is depleted.[needs testing]
- While holding
- It has three passive abilities:
- Fly over everything (like the Dragon). Its movement speed is consistent over everything except water and lava. The Phoenix is very slow over any water (such as oases and water spots), and is much faster on lava. Also, the Phoenix naturally moves slower in the Desert, and was made to do so for balancing purposes.
- Fiery bite: when it bites an animal, it will catch on fire for a few seconds. If the animal dies from the fire damage, their XP is given directly to the Phoenix: They don't drop meat like with normal fire.
- Reduced boost interval: There's less delay per each boost which makes the Phoenix quite fast, especially on lava. The Phoenix has normal boost interval in the Desert for balancing purposes.
- The Phoenix can hide in all normal hiding spots. It can also hide in the Volcano's core.
- Unlike most animals, the Phoenix can dive in lava but not water.
Appearance
The Classic/Season 1 Phoenix, which is the default design as of now, is an orange avian animal with a fire motif. It has a broad head, a pointy broad beak with nostrils, and yellow orange wings ending in fire. Its body is slightly darker than its head. It has short fiery tail feathers.
The Classic/Season 1, Alpha, Golden, and Copper Phoenix skins have a passive ripple animation on their wing and tail flames to make them seem like they are made of fire, turned on by default. This animation can be toggled off and on in-game for all Phoenixes by typing /anim-switch:phoenix into the chat. Other skins have no animation and the command doesn't have any effect.
All skins have a unique fire tornado and fire skin, but the fire tornado is always a circular whirl of fire.

Strategy

- The Phoenix is one of the more technical animals of its tier. A full understanding of its capabilities is needed to use it to its fullest extent.
- The most important piece of advice is to stay at the Volcano. Much of the Phoenix's protection from rares, equivalents, and monsters comes from the fire/lava, the passive decrease in speed the Volcano gives to non-Volcano animals, and the usual presence of Land Monsters and Black Dragons who will take advantage of the former two to attack intruders.
- In short, unless the player is on a fairly empty server, they will be quickly mobbed and killed if they leave the Volcano.
- Watermelons are among the most valuable food sources in the game. If not doing anything in particular, always seek to farm them and red mushrooms, which also give ample XP.
- More likely than not there will be competition for watermelon. While the player can attack other Phoenixes to potentially ward them off, an easier strategy is to "claim" a certain region of the Volcano for farming to avoid confrontations.
- Expect to accidentally tail-bite and be tailbitten frequently. The close quarters of the Volcano on crowded servers and the Phoenix's speed on lava can make it difficult to avoid tails.
- This does not mean every tail-bite is accidental, and the player should still guard their tail in case another player actually wants to start a fight.
- If one must, only leave the Volcano for brief periods and never stray far from it.
- The player should search outside of the Volcano and take advantage of their reduced boost interval to quickly catch up to prey. Especially attempt to kill Elephants: They give the most XP when killed, grow to large sizes, and can't climb hills or rocks.
- Do try to chase prey away from the Volcano and not towards the Volcano because the kill can very easily be stolen by other Phoenixes, Land Monsters, or Black Dragons. Also, it's recommended to try cutting corners and keep them within a certain "box" because the Phoenix loses lava near the Ocean.
- While the Phoenix's fire tornadoes are fairly slow, they apply pressure through their fireballs, which deplete the animal's water supply. It can ultimately cut chases short due to water shortage, so the player should fire one before chasing any animal and fire a couple more later.
- Having several fire tornadoes is wasteful, takes time since the Phoenix's ability has a lengthy cooldown, and isn't really better than just 2 or 3 because the damage is dealt by igniting the opponent with their fireballs, not by sheer contact. It's unlikely that the player will have more than 6 fire tornadoes at a time because they despawn after a while.
- Fire tornadoes are an ideal option if animals are harassing the player and refuse to leave. The water loss may force them to leave for water.
- Ideally, the player should refrain from spitting fire with
S. It drains about a quarter of their lava bar per fireball, and the damage given (if it even hits) is not enough to compensate. Fire should only be spat at an animal at very low health directly in front of the player, and only if the player is confident said animal won't turn or isn't in the middle of one. Fireballs hit animals under tree canopies. - Lava lakes are tremendously useful for running away and creating space from other animals, since they serve as a hazard for most other animals. In the Desert, the player can even afk in one, although doing so for long periods, in more populated servers, or when there's a Giant Scorpion around is not recommended.
- If the Volcano is too crowded with Phoenixes, Land Monsters, Black Dragons or even a King Dragon, the player can try relocating to the Desert.
- This is fairly dangerous for any Phoenix. It's best for the player to leave the Volcano when predators are distracted somewhere else and are less likely to attack the player as they leave. Start boosting away from the bottommost point of the Volcano, and stop doing so once the player feels that they are far enough.
- The main threat is being attacked by another apex or monster (especially Dino Monsters) on the way over. As long as the player is in the lava radius zone, they can simply wait out the person pursuing them in a hiding hole, although this will not work if they are a lava-based animal.
- In the Desert, the Phoenix does not lose lava naturally, but is slower than most animals and loses its reduced boost interval. This makes hunting very difficult, so the player should just farm plentiful cacti and aloevera instead. If any animal does come close, they can launch a fire tornado and chase them as best as they can and hope that their fire tornado can finish them if they're low.
- Also, because of the Phoenix's movement speed reduction and regular boost interval, the Phoenix is very poor at running away from anything. If the player is being chased, it's best to fly over hills and rocks if their pursuer is one that can't climb either as soon as the player sees them.
- The Phoenix doesn't regain lava very quickly, and is only marginally faster at doing so in Desert lava spots. The only way it can quickly gain lava is through Healing Stones, which are abundant in the landscape. The sheer quantity allows the player to be fairly reckless about boosting and launching fire tornadoes as long as they can find a stone, but it's not a good idea in the scenario a predator arrives.
- Unlike in its lava radius, the Phoenix loses lava in hiding holes in the desert. The player shouldn't stay in one for prolonged periods.
- All Desert animals are slow in water, so the player doesn't need to worry about them attempting to go into water.
- The Phoenix has several Desert threats:
- Pterodactyls are the local apex, so the player should expect to frequently find them. In close range combat, they pale against the Phoenix's fire tornadoes and fiery bites, but afar is where they can pester the player with their pickup ability. The damage inflicted by it is pretty measly and costs the Pterodactyl at least a quarter of their energy bar, but can be the finishing blow if the player has low health.
- The ability has a notable charge up time before taking off into the air, so the player can prevent them from flying by spitting or with a fire tornado if they're close. Fire quickly depletes the Pterodactyl's health in combat, so it's quite safe to attack any the player sees and smart Pterodactyls will shy away. If a Pterodactyl dives at the player or the player thinks one might, enter a hiding hole.
- T-Rexs are much harder to deal with, and are best avoided. Their ability does serious damage and reloads quicker than the player's. If the player finds one, use rocks, hills, and lava spots to move around and as a buffer. Stay away from the edge of the terrain and lava where the T-Rex can rip the player off (this may be impossible depending on the player's and foe's size).
- Giant Scorpions are the largest threat the player will find in the Desert. Their ability has enormous range, inflicts massive damage, stops the player from boosting, and its prolonged shivering can kill even in hiding holes. Even worse, Giant Scorpions can walk on lava and climb rocks and hills at an elevated pace. If the player is stung, it's curtains for them.
- The only chance the player has of survival is staying on a (rare) tree where the Giant Scorpion cannot sting the player and where the player can safely stay on to regenerate some health, although obviously this is a temporary solution. Fire tornadoes can be launched to inflict water pressure on the Giant Scorpion and lower its large health bar; The player shouldn't launch too many to conserve lava for a getaway.
- Running to the Land biome may also work, since the Phoenix loses its Desert nerfs and can boost at its normal elevated intervals. The Giant Scorpion's stings outside the desert (not pre-existing shivering) are significantly weaker. The only problem is that the player will be outside of their lava radius and will drain lava rapidly.
- Dino Monsters are also fairly frequent in the Desert. They can make quick work of the player with just a few charges. Their ability makes running away very difficult to pull off successfully, so it's important to dodge them as much as possible. Treat them similarly to a T-Rex: use rocks and oasis quicksand as a barrier, the former being completely inaccessible by them and the latter slowing them down immensely. Lava lakes are also an option. The Dino Monster's ability is not affected by fire, but the player can use fire tornadoes to discourage them.
- The Phoenix is relatively poor at direct confrontations in out of arena 1v1s. However, it excels at weathering down the opponent's water bar and keeping them from regenerating health with its fire bite and fire tornadoes, so as long as the player can avoid abilities and shoot multiple fire tornadoes, in just a few moments their foe will be out of water and the player can tailbite them much more easily without the ability to defend effectively.
- Fire tornadoes immediately despawn if the player enters a hiding hole, so if the player wants to attack another apex, they need to commit.
- The reduced boost interval is a doubled-edged sword out of arena. While it makes moonwalking and attacking quicker, it's also that much easier to drain the lava bar and the player must conserve lava for fire tornadoes.
- Now that your ability can damage Dragons, you can attempt fighting them. Have a tornado ready and shoot it whenever possible, and try to get good tail-bites in. The tornadoes can be used in hiding holes too. Doing this will result in lots of damage being done to the Dragon.
- Do not go into a hiding hole unless you are low health when you do, since your tornado will die. Do not go to water either, as you are very slow at water, and also cannot dive, plus the Fire Tornadoes will lose health quickly. However, you should also avoid the T-Rex. It is not as easy to deal with compared to Dragons, and its ability can cause a huge amount of damage to you, and can even drag you away from lava if you're near it.
- Try not to fight a King Crab, as they are quite dangerous. and their ability does massive damage. It's best to simply fire multiple tornadoes at it, and then try to kill it when the tornadoes gradually reduce its health to almost nothing. That way, you can also stop the Crab from using its ability if it's on fire.
- With a Yeti, lead it close to the Volcano. The Yeti will be burnt by the searing heat of the volcano, and you will get a free meal. However, if you are in the Land biome, don't try fighting one unless it's at low health, as freeze does massive damage to phoenixes.
- If you happen to meet a Kraken somewhere in the ocean, SCRAM!!! The Kraken can easily kill you alone in the ocean, due to its ability doing massive damage and stunning. However, if you see one in the River or in a Lake, make it resurface, and push it onto Land. The Kraken will lose water insanely fast and when it is at minimum health, stalk it from the back and bite its tail and kill it. However, if it is in an Oasis, don't fight it. You are extremely slow in them, plus you can't dive. Then, it will be YOUR turn to die from the Kraken’s whirlpool.
- Because Black Dragons can be burnt by fire tornadoes too, shoot a fire tornado at them, and run away if you see one coming after you. When you see a Black Dragon at low health, shoot a fire tornado at it too, and hope it kills. Try not to annoy any BD too much, otherwise they may try eating you.
- If multiple people are teaming on you, create a fire tornado and allow it to act as a distraction and a form of attack. Always play defensively when being teamed on to prevent yourself from dying too, which means protecting your tail. Fire tornadoes can also be used to make people who are following you go away, and to help you attack other Phoenixes. Try to temporarily team up with other animals in your situation to have a higher chance of escaping.
- Try to avoid the Monsters, especially the Land Monster as it will spend most of its time near lava sources. If your internet isn't so good, make sure to keep away from any other Phoenix, no matter if they are teaming with you or not, to avoid lag. You can also eat Watermelons, if you're not doing anything in particular at the Volcano.
Criticism
Before the "Golden Age" update, the Phoenix was criticized due to its excessive lava loss when leaving the Volcano, especially being an apex tier animal.
After the Golden Age update occurred on December 23, 2019, when the Desert was adjusted to acquire Lava animals, the Phoenix became extremely overpowered. It would hardly lose lava in the Desert, and the fire tornadoes were now able to move extremely fast and were hard to escape; particularly, the Phoenix made the Pterodactyl practically unplayable due to the fire stopping them from using the flying ability, and being able to damage them a lot.
Later on, the Developers made some nerfs for the Phoenix, making it have longer boost intervals, losing lava overtime unless in a lava spot, having a shorter diving time in lava and making the Tornadoes being a little slower, making it a mediocre Lava animal, but somewhat unplayable in the Desert due to Giant Scorpions and Dino Monsters easily being able to overtake the Phoenix and kill it from low lava loss.
Trivia
Interesting facts
- The Phoenix is the first entity that can make and control any type of tornado, and also the only one to create a purely fire-based tornado.
- Phoenix fire tornadoes were affected by natural tornadoes; they were able to be flung and duplicated like food. If they were sucked into one they lost their tracking and hovered around in place meaninglessly, making them useless when trying to attack another animal.
- Its ability is one of the very few to have been reworked.
- The ability's target locks onto carcasses and healing stones as if they were players.
- The Phoenix and the Land Monster are the only two animals that can dive in lava and cannot dive in water.
- The Phoenix's former upgrade message misspells tornadoes as "torandoes".
- It's one of the few animals that has a passive animation.
- The animation for the Phoenix was on by default, was deactivated in an update and needed a command toggle, and is now on by default again.
- Because chat is needed to type commands, it is currently impossible to disable the animation while playing logged-out.
- Luca Anker noted that the Alpha Phoenix was originally going to be named Blue Giant Phoenix, but King Of Agario decided on the other name instead. Alpha Phoenix's name is related to alpha stars in constellations, and was supposed to have a space theme.[1]
- The Ash Phoenix skin bears a strong resemblance to a "Sky Monster" concept from Reddit.[2]
- The Copper Phoenix is the first skin since the Golden Age skins to have animation, a gap of over five years (2019–2025).
- The Singularity Phoenix was made by designer Lapis Lazuli.
- The Celestial Phoenix was made by Phoenix, also known as Jasper, a small Mopetuber.
- Even without animation, the Season 1, Golden, and Alpha Phoenixes are slightly asymmetrical. This is especially noticeable on the Season 1 Phoenix, in which one of its nostrils is flipped the wrong way.
Glitches
Comparison between an Aqua and Golden Phoenix without and with animation turned on.
- When the Phoenix first came out, its lava bar would turn into a water bar when in a hiding hole, but otherwise would function as normal. This visual bug was patched a couple months later.
- Before the November 15, 2024 changes, if the animation for the Phoenix is toggled on, all Phoenix skins except for the Season 1, Golden, and Alpha Phoenixes rendered as a cut circle that was actually the biome outline. This was due to them not having animation-only assets. This is no longer the case after the update: they show their normal skins regardless of animation.
